Time for a picture post!

A lot has happened since I posted back in October. We've had Halloween with trick-or-treating and pumpkin patches, Thanksgiving with family visiting, and Christmas prep. Instead of writing out everything we did, I'm just going to do pictures and captions. mmkay?

Pumpkin Patch
Our last hike before it turned too cold.

Beautiful Fall colors!
First time playing in the snow.
My pumpkin. First time doing anything other than the usual triangle eyes and mouth. :)
Chris's pumpkin. He got creative this year too. I think this is one of the crazier/creepier looking pumpkins I've seen.
Sadie's Halloween costume: Minnie Mouse!
Sadie is Minnie, I'm Daisy Duck, and Chris is...well, Chris.
Trick or treating.
The crew! We have been blessed to find lots of friends here to do fun things with, including Trick-or-Treating.
I love the smirk on her face. That's my girl. :)
Snow with daddy!
Playing with Grandpa. Wheee!!!!
So fun!
Sadie loves to play on the bed. This morning she was especially cute and playful.

We went to Casa Bonita with my family for my brother Craig's birthday after Thanksgiving. It was definitely an adventure! Food was....not so great. Atmosphere was super fun! Despite the food, I would go back.
I think that's all I got for now. Hopefully I'll remember to take some pictures when we're with Chris's family for Christmas soon.

Little Moments

I feel like life has been going by faster than I can keep up with for the last month or so. My little Sadie is growing up so fast and I want to just take a minute to record some of the things I am loving so much about her. Before I know it she will be in a whole new stage of development and I don't want to forget a single thing.

Sadie is somewhat growing out of the take-everything-out-of-the-cupboards-just-for-the-thrill-of-it phase and into the I-wonder-what-I-can-do-with-the-stuff-I-find-in-the-cupboards phase. She is learning the purpose behind different objects. She loves using the pots and mixing bowls in the kitchen as containers for various trinkets she finds, like puzzle pieces or clothespins.

She loves to push things and is especially delighted if those things have wheels. She just got a little stroller and baby for Christmas and loves to push it around. She got a walker for her birthday months ago but she is just now really getting into it. She'll just push it through the apartment, looking around and getting mad when she pushes herself into a corner she can't get out of easily.

She got a Cabbage Patch doll from her grandparents for Christmas and she adores it. She sleeps with it, carries it around with her, tries to make it fit in the stroller that was built for a smaller doll, gives it a binkie... It's so cute to see her taking care of it.

She is beginning to notice things that mommy or daddy do and likes to copy. She can reach the bathroom counter and likes to take my hairbrush and put it against her head like she's brushing her hair. She finds the spare toothbrushes and likes to practice brushing her teeth (even though she hates doing it for real at bedtime). She tries to sing along to Twinkle Twinkle Little Star at bedtime (if she's not too sleepy) and sometimes does a singing copy game with daddy.

She isn't saying much yet consistently other than "dada" and "mama" but we've heard her say words like sock, shoe, cheese, and all done. Chris will swear she said touch-down once during a football game. Unfortunately we've only heard these other words once so it's hard to say if she actually said them or if it was just babble that sounded like a word we wanted to hear. Who knows.

She can point to her nose, hair, eyes, and belly button. She waves, gives high fives, and makes the touch-down sign.

She has lots of teeth: 8 in front (4 top, 4 bottom) and has at least 3 molars poking through, possibly more. She is very private with her mouth and doesn't like to show what's going on in there.

My favorite thing that she does nowadays is give spontaneous hugs. I'll be washing dishes at the sink and she'll come over and hug my leg. Or after changing her diaper or putting clothes on she'll stand up on the changing table and put her little arms around my neck. It melts my heart every time.

If you ask her to do something, often she will do it. Well, perhaps not often, she has to be in a helpful mood. But she understands commands like "Go get your shoes" or "Put that in the garbage" and if she doesn't get that sneaky grin then she'll usually do it.

Someone told us this week that Sadie has "a sweet disposition". Chris and I looked at each other skeptically and smiled. After further thought, I decided that she really does have a sweet disposition. But she also has a very mischievous side and sometimes does things just because she knows it's naughty. When you tell her "No no Sadie" she'll grin and shake her head back and forth. It's really cute and makes it hard to be mad at her.

Most of the time she is super sweet. She loves to share and plays really well with other kids. She is definitely a little social butterfly. She is rarely more happy than when she is playing with friends. It makes me wish she had a sibling to play with. ...Someday Sadie, someday.

She loves to read books and can entertain herself with them for some time. Perhaps she will be like her parents in this way.

I am so in love with my little girl. I love this age (16 months) and all the adventures it holds. She is learning new things everyday and I can hardly keep up with her. She is happy and curious and busy and makes life wonderful. Though I never really vented about it, this is such a change from when she was about 10-12 months old. I felt like she was fussy all the time and I was constantly stressed. Raising kids sure is a roller coaster, but I'm happy to ride it out.

It's official, I have a toddler.

The biggest news from the last 2 months is that Sadie has very recently mastered the skill of walking. She took her first steps back on September 11 (easy enough date to remember) but refused to do it again for weeks. Poor Chris had to wait forever to see her walk, but once she started she didn't want to stop. In the evenings after Chris came home from work she would practice walking between us. She would be so excited when she reached mommy or daddy without falling, her mouth would open as wide as it would go and then she'd laugh and squeal. So fun. Here's the video we got of her very first steps. We were visiting Allison and the girls for the afternoon. I was glad someone else was there to witness the occasion.

In the last couple weeks she has been practicing more and more just walking between close objects. Then over about 2 days she just started walking everywhere. She hardly ever crawls anymore. It's crazy how once she believed she could do it, she just decided to walk. 14 months old and a walker! I guess the "easy" part is over. She's just getting faster and faster and into things that much easier. Oh the joys of parenthood. :)

There's the open-mouth excited face she gets when she walks.
Playing with magnets on the fridge. If she can reach them, they're fair game.
She loves to play with the Rock Band drumsticks.
hahaha!! This is one of the most hilarious faces I've ever seen her make. I'm so glad I caught it on camera. I think she was mad because I wouldn't pick her up and insisted on taking pictures.
Wearing daddy's BYU hat. Go Cougars!!
Halloween kitty cat hoodie. You can't see too well, but the hood has cat ears. :)
Playing in luggage mommy uses as a dresser. We really should invest in some furniture one of these days...
She LOVES this Dora bike she got from Grandma and Grandpa Jewkes for her birthday. She rides it everywhere.

Late Summer Adventures

I can't seem to stick to my goal of monthly blogging, so I won't be able to do justice all the fun things we've done since I last posted.

Recently, my youngest brother Steven came home from his LDS mission. On his way to school this fall in Provo, UT, he and my parents stopped in Colorado for a visit. My oldest brother Craig came for a visit, and Daniel and Becca surprised us with a quick visit as well, so we ended up having the whole family there except for Teresa and Frank and co. They were definitely missed, but it was fun to be with everyone else for a few days. We went to Boondocks and did mini-golf, bowling, bumper boats, and go-karts and had lots of LAN parties in Ben and Allison's basement. Game of choice was, as usual, Unreal Tournament 2004. Good times. After Steven and Dad left to get Steven checked in to school and Craig, Daniel, and Becca all left, Mom came up to Greeley to stay with me and Chris for a couple days. It was fun to have Grandma over. We went and had portraits taken at Walmart of Sadie for her birthday. I don't have a scanner and I wasn't about to fork over $150 to get a cd of the photo shoot so I can't upload the shots here, but believe me, they were adorable. There's not a whole lot to do in Greeley, but it sure was fun to have my mom here just to hang out a little bit. She treated us to groceries and dinner at Red Lobster. Nom. (And unfortunately, I'm realizing now that I only have these 2 pictures from the entire week...bummer.)

On Labor Day weekend we went to Utah and were able to visit with Chris's family. We celebrated birthdays and Sadie got to eat a whole cake (the equivalent of 4 cupcakes) slathered in gooey frosting by herself. She was in heaven. We were gifted some seriously awesome/sweet/thoughtful gifts. Sadie got a Dora the Explorer riding toy that she LOVES, along with a walker, a VTech Learning lady bug toy, blocks, a stuffed puppy, an awesome bedtime book, sippy cups, and some really cute clothes. She plays with them all on a regular basis. I was given a new Jillian Michaels workout dvd which totally kicks my butt, a yoga ball and workout book, a book of Gothic stories (I've since read 2 out of the 5), a really beautiful book of Mary Engelbreit poetry about motherhood, a movie trivia game and popcorn buckets, some yummy candy and a workout shirt. My in-laws are fabulous.

Also during our visit we had a softball game. I haven't played softball since middle school; I wasn't good at it then, and I'm not any better at it now. When I was in school and it was my turn at bat, I remember my friends telling me to imagine the ball was my big brother Ben to help me channel my energy in hopes of actually getting a hit. Sadly, I don't think that strategy worked too well.

We also did a mock Iron Chef competition. Each couple chose something to cook within an hour and had a friendly competition to see who could make the most awesome dish. Chris and I made gyoza, Japanese potstickers. Now, I don't want to brag or anything, but we all voted anonymously at the end and Chris and I totally won. :D  I voted for Lori's Swedish dessert rolls. Oh goodness, they were yummy. Some other dishes were empanadas, meatballs, pulled pork, and pizza. Everything was super delicious.

After all the visiting with family we returned home and have spent some quality time hanging out together and relaxing. Well, relaxing during the time we get between working and the everyday hustle and bustle. Sadie has had some major accomplishments lately, but I'll devote a separate post for that. :)

It's my party and I'll cry if I want to

Last weekend we had Sadie's first birthday party and it was a huge success! Thankfully there was no crying, but there was lots of cake and friends. Though we've only lived in the area for about 2 months, we have been blessed to make some wonderful friends who were able to share the afternoon with us. We took a ton of pictures of the party and I want to post them all but, since we took over a hundred, I should probably be a least a little selective.
Here's the birthday girl in her special party dress, waiting for friends to arrive.
Sadie loved reading her birthday cards. Thank you grandparents and great-grandparents!
We got her this pony riding toy a couple weeks ago for one of her presents. She seems to have figured it out pretty well.

I did some research online and decided to try my hand at decorating a cake for the big event. I've never done anything more extravagant than dumping canned frosting onto a store-bought cake mix, so this was kind of a big deal. It required repeated trips to the store as I kept forgetting things, and then a last minute late-night Walmart run for a frosting tip coupler (the thing that attaches the tip to the bag--I had no idea I even needed one), but eventually I had everything I required to make a fabulous cake. Though a seasoned cake decorator would surely see a bounty of flaws in my work, I'm still pretty proud of what I came up with.

I made a regular sheet cake of yellow cake mix for the bottom, then I made a chocolate devils food cake mix and baked it in a cereal bowl for the body of the ladybug. The head is just a chocolate cupcake covered in black icing. I piped all the grass (which wasn't as tedious as I anticipated---it was actually kind of therapeutic) and piped the spots on the ladybug. I made the buttercream frosting from a recipe I got from my amazing cake-decorating sister-in-law Allison and it was super delicious. I've made buttercream frosting before that didn't taste as good and I think the trick was using real butter. I always just use what I have, which tends to be light margarine, and the difference was significant. No healthy shortcuts when it comes to good frosting. Yum!!

We threw the party with some friends of ours that also just moved to the area and have a boy named Asher, who is 4 days older than Sadie. Once friends arrived we just let the kids all play for a bit before we got out the cake and ice cream and let the birthday babies go to town.

I still can't believe how much Sadie LOVED her cupcake that she got to eat all by herself. The girl devoured the whole thing and then was on a crazy sugar high the rest of the party. Nom nom nom!
Happy birthday to you!

After cake and ice cream I gave Sadie and Asher each a special wrapped present: a box of tissues of their own for them to do with what they will. I promised myself I would let Sadie take out every single tissue and shred each one to her heart's content and I wouldn't mind. She was in heaven.

Really? Is this a trick?? I usually get in trouble for emptying the tissues...

Cousin Rosie came to help finish off the tissues. Such a good helper. :)
We made a bit of a mess...
Overall it was a wonderful birthday party!! We are so grateful to friends and family who traveled from near and far to be with us. Happy birthday to our little Sadie Bug! We love you forever and are so lucky to have you in our lives. May we continue to be blessed with many more birthdays together. <3
